History

Founded in 1818

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Early County was created from non-county area on December 15, 1818, and named after Peter Early. The county lost territory to the creation of Decatur in 1823, Baker in 1825, Clay in 1854, Calhoun in 1854, and Miller in 1856, with additional boundary adjustments through the 1860s.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
