History

Founded in 1800

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Barnwell District became Barnwell County in 1868 when a new state constitution abolished all judicial districts. The county lost territory to the creation of Aiken County in 1871, exchanged territory with Aiken in 1874, and lost land to the creation of Bamberg County in 1897 and Allendale County in 1919.
