History

Formed in 1804 from Mason County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Greenup County was named after Christopher Greenup. The county lost territory to the creation of Lawrence County in 1822, and lost further land to the creation of Carter and Boyd counties in 1838 and 1860.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
