History

Formed in 1799 from Green County and Warren County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Barren County was created in 1799 from Green and Cumberland Counties and was named after the Barrens. The county lost and gained land over the following decades as neighboring counties were formed or adjusted their boundaries, including the loss of territory to Allen, Hart, Monroe, Metcalfe, and Adair Counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
