History

Formed in 1843 from Breathitt County, Clay County and Estill County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Owsley County was created on June 1, 1843, from parts of Breathitt, Clay, and Estill counties. The county was named after William Owsley. Over the following decades, Owsley County experienced multiple boundary changes through exchanges with neighboring counties including the loss of territory to the creation of Jackson, Wolfe, and Lee counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
