History

Formed in 1821 from Clay County and Floyd County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Perry County was created from Clay and Floyd counties and named after Oliver Hazard Perry. Over the following decades, the county's boundaries changed multiple times through the creation of new counties—Breathitt in 1839, Harlan in 1841, and Letcher in 1842—each taking territory from Perry. Perry also gained and lost small areas to neighboring counties to accommodate local property owners.
