History
Formed in 1807 from Mason County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Lewis County was created from Mason County on April 1, 1807. Over its history, Lewis County exchanged small areas with neighboring counties: it gained from and lost to Carter County in 1868 and 1871, lost a small area to Mason County in 1890, and temporarily lost territory to the creation of Beckham County in 1904 before regaining it when Beckham County was eliminated by court decision.
