History

Formed in 1793 from Nelson County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Hardin County was created from Nelson County on February 20, 1793, and named after John Hardin. The county lost territory over time: Ohio County was created from Hardin in 1799, followed by Breckinridge in 1800, Green in 1804, Grayson in 1810, Hart in 1819, Meade in 1824, and Larue in 1843.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
