History

Formed in 1815 from Ohio County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Daviess County was created from Ohio County on June 1, 1815, and was named after Joseph Hamilton Daveiss. The county experienced several boundary adjustments over the 19th century, including the loss of territory to the creation of Hancock County in 1829 and McLean County in 1854, and the gain of territory from Ohio County in 1830 and from Henderson County in 1860.
