History

Formed in 1799 from Green County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Cumberland County was created from Green County on July 1, 1799, and was named after the Cumberland River. The county's boundaries shifted many times over the following decades as neighboring counties—including Barren, Wayne, Adair, Monroe, Russell, Clinton, and Metcalfe—were created from or exchanged portions with Cumberland County.
