History

Formed in 1799 from Franklin County and Shelby County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Gallatin County was created on May 13, 1799, from Franklin and Shelby counties. The county was named after Albert Gallatin. Over its early decades, Gallatin County's boundaries changed multiple times, losing territory to the creation of Owen, Boone, Trimble, and Carroll counties, and briefly gaining and losing land to Grant County in 1867 and 1868.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
