History

Formed in 1808 from Clark County and Madison County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Estill County was created on April 1, 1808, from Clark and Madison counties. Over the following decades, the county gained and lost territory through various boundary adjustments, including gains from Clay, Montgomery, and Owsley counties, and losses that created Breathitt, Owsley, Powell, Jackson, and Lee counties.
