History

Formed in 1800 from Lincoln County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Knox County was created from Lincoln County on June 2, 1800. Over the following decades, Knox County gained and lost territory through boundary adjustments, including gaining land from Madison County in 1805 and losing territory to the creation of Rockcastle County in 1810, Whitley County in 1818, Harlan County in 1819, and Laurel County in 1826.
