History

Formed in 1801 from Cumberland County, Green County and Pulaski County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Wayne County was created in 1801 from Cumberland, Green, and Pulaski counties and was named after Anthony Wayne. The county gained and lost territory several times over its history, including gaining land from Adair and Pulaski counties, and losing land to the creation of Russell, Clinton, and McCreary counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
