History

Formed in 1843 from Floyd County and Lawrence County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Johnson County was created from Floyd and Lawrence counties in 1843 and named after Richard Mentor Johnson. The county lost territory to the creation of Magoffin County in 1860 and Martin County in 1870, and exchanged territory with Floyd County in 1878.
