History
Formed in 1792 from Nelson County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Washington County was created from Nelson County on September 1, 1792, and named after George Washington. Over the following century, the county lost territory to the creation of Anderson County in 1827, Marion County in 1834 and 1845, and Mercer County in 1860, with a final loss of small areas to Anderson and Mercer counties in 1890.
