History

Formed in 1818 from Knox County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Whitley County was created from Knox County in 1818 and named after William Whitley. The county gained and lost land through multiple boundary adjustments with neighboring counties from 1826 to 1912, including territory from Pulaski, Knox, Laurel, Josh Bell (now Bell), and losing land to the creation of Laurel and McCreary counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
