History
Formed in 1826 from Adair County, Cumberland County and Wayne County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Russell County was created in 1826 from Adair, Cumberland, and Wayne Counties. In 1840, it gained territory from Pulaski County. Small boundary adjustments followed in 1841 and 1864 with Clinton and Casey Counties, with an 1841 exchange later repealed in 1868.
