History

Formed in 1860 from Breathitt County, Morgan County, Owsley County and Powell County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Wolfe County was created from Breathitt, Morgan, Owsley, and Powell counties on July 1, 1860. The county was named after Nathaniel Wolfe. Its boundaries changed several times in the decades after its creation, gaining and losing territory to Morgan, Menifee, and Lee counties through 1890.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
