History

Formed in 1810 from Logan County and Ohio County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Butler County was created from Logan and Ohio counties on May 1, 1810. The county was named after Richard Butler. Butler gained a small area from Logan on December 29, 1813, and gained from Ohio on March 15, 1871. In 1890, Butler lost territory to Muhlenberg County.
