History
Formed in 1786 from Lincoln County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Mercer County was created by Virginia from Lincoln County in 1786. When Kentucky became a state in 1792, Mercer became a Kentucky county. Over the following decades, the county's boundaries changed as neighboring counties were created from its territory, including Franklin in 1795, Garrard in 1797, Anderson in 1827, and Boyle in 1842, while it also gained small areas from neighboring counties.
