History

Formed in 1852 from Clark County, Estill County and Montgomery County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Powell County was created on May 10, 1852, from Clark, Estill, and Montgomery counties and was named after Lazarus Powell. The county's boundaries changed several times in its early decades, losing territory to the creation of Wolfe and Menifee counties between 1860 and 1869, and gaining small areas from Estill and Menifee counties in later adjustments.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
