History

Formed in 1789 from Bourbon County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Mason County was created by Virginia in 1789 from Bourbon County, and named after George Mason. When Kentucky became a state in 1792, Mason became a Kentucky county and subsequently lost territory to the creation of Campbell, Bracken, Fleming, Floyd, Nicholas, Greenup, Lewis, and Robertson counties.
