History

Formed in 1869 from Carter County, Lawrence County and Morgan County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Elliott County was created from Carter, Lawrence, and Morgan counties on April 1, 1869. In the years following its formation, Elliott exchanged small areas with Morgan in 1870 to accommodate local property owners, and lost small areas to Carter in 1880 and to Rowan in 1882 for the same reason. In 1904, Elliott lost territory to the newly created Beckham County, but regained that area when Beckham's creation was overturned by court decision on constitutional grounds and the county was eliminated.
