History
Formed in 1815 from Gallia County and Scioto County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Lawrence County was created on December 21, 1815, from Gallia County and Scioto County but was not fully organized; parts of the new county were attached to Gallia and Scioto for administrative and judicial purposes. On March 1, 1817, Lawrence gained a small area from Scioto County and was fully organized, separating from Gallia and Scioto for its own administration. Over the following decades, Lawrence exchanged and gained and lost small areas with Scioto and Gallia Counties through 1840.
