History
Formed in 1843 from Chippewa County, Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Ontonagon County was created from Chippewa, Michilimackinac (now Mackinac), and Non-County Area 6, but was not fully organized and was attached to Chippewa for judicial purposes. In 1845, the county lost Isle Royale to the creation of Houghton County, and in 1846 it was detached from Chippewa and attached to Houghton for judicial and other purposes. Ontonagon County became fully organized and independent in 1853 after gaining territory from Houghton County. The county later lost land to Houghton in 1861 and to the creation of Gogebic County in 1887.
