History

Formed in 1840 from Michilimackinac County, Mackinac County and Saginaw County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally called Shawono when created in 1840 from Michilimackinac County, it was renamed Crawford in 1843. For nearly four decades, the county was attached to neighboring counties for judicial and municipal purposes, including Cheboygan, Iosco, Antrim, and Kalkaska, before becoming fully organized in 1879.
