History
Formed in 1840 from Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Manistee County was created from Michilimackinac (now Mackinac) in 1840 and was named after the Manistee River. The county was initially attached to Michilimackinac for judicial purposes, then transferred to Ottawa in 1846 and to Grand Traverse in 1853. Manistee was fully organized in 1855, and experienced boundary changes over subsequent decades, including exchanges with Wexford County in 1869 and 1881.
