History

Formed in 1843 from Chippewa County, Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Schoolcraft County was created from parts of Chippewa and Michilimackinac (now Mackinac) Counties, named after Henry Schoolcraft. Not fully organized at first, the county was attached to Chippewa, then Houghton, then Marquette for judicial purposes before becoming fully organized in 1871.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
