History

Formed in 1827 from Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Chippewa County was created by Michigan Territory on February 1, 1827, from Michilimackinac County (now Mackinac County) and initially included parts of present-day Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. In 1836, when Wisconsin Territory was created from Michigan Territory, Chippewa lost territory in present-day Wisconsin and Minnesota. In 1843 and 1846, Chippewa exchanged territory with Mackinac County and eventually lost land to the creation of Marquette, Ontonagon, Schoolcraft, Houghton, and Luce counties.
