History
Formed in 1831 from Michilimackinac County, Mackinac County and Kalamazoo County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Isabella County was created by Michigan Territory on March 2, 1831, from Michilimackinac County, though it was not fully organized at the time. The county was named after Isabella I of Castile. Isabella was attached to Saginaw County in 1836 for judicial purposes, then saw several boundary changes over the following decades as parts were attached to or detached from neighboring counties including Ionia, Midland, and Clare. Isabella was fully organized on February 11, 1859, when it was detached from Midland County.
