History

Formed in 1874 from Lake County and St. Louis County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Cook County was created on November 3, 1874, from Lake County and St. Louis County, and was initially organized for county government while attached to St. Louis County for judicial purposes. In 1891, Cook County was detached from St. Louis County and attached to Lake County for judicial purposes. Cook County became fully organized and independent on January 1, 1901, when it was detached from Lake County.
