History
Formed in 1829 from Lenawee County and Oakland County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Barry County was created by Michigan Territory from parts of Lenawee and Oakland Counties on October 29, 1829, and was named after William T. Barry. The county was initially not fully organized and was attached to St. Joseph County, then to Kalamazoo County for administrative and judicial purposes, before being fully organized and detached from Kalamazoo on March 15, 1839. Barry County lost territory to the creation of Allegan County on March 31, 1831.
