Genesee County was created in 1835 from Lapeer, Saginaw, and Shiawassee, but was not fully organized and remained attached to Oakland County for judicial purposes. In 1836, Genesee was fully organized and detached from Oakland, while Shiawassee was attached to Genesee for judicial purposes. Shiawassee became fully organized and detached from Genesee in 1837, and Genesee gained territory from Lapeer in 1843.
