History

Formed in 1831 from Michilimackinac County, Mackinac County and Kalamazoo County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Montcalm County was created by Michigan Territory from Michilimackinac (now Mackinac County). The county was named after Louis-Joseph de Montcalm. Montcalm was initially not fully organized and was attached to Ionia County for judicial purposes in 1837, with that arrangement confirmed in 1840. The county was fully organized and detached from Ionia in 1850, and gained territory from Mecosta County in 1859.
