History

Formed in 1831 from Michilimackinac County, Mackinac County and Kalamazoo County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Ionia County was created by Michigan Territory on March 2, 1831, from Michilimackinac County. The county was named after Ionia. Initially unorganized and attached to Kent County for judicial purposes, Ionia was fully organized and detached from Kent on April 3, 1837. Montcalm County, attached to Ionia for judicial purposes in 1837, was fully organized and detached in 1850.
