History
Formed in 1829 from Lenawee County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
When Hillsdale County was created, it included part of a disputed strip west of Lake Erie that was claimed by Ohio but controlled by Michigan. It was first attached to Lenawee County for administrative purposes, then fully organized and detached in 1835. In 1837, when Michigan became a state, Hillsdale County lost territory to Ohio as the boundary dispute was settled in Ohio's favor.
