History
Formed in 1840 from Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Emmet County was created from Michilimackinac County in 1840 as Tonedagana, though it was not fully organized and was attached to Michilimackinac for judicial purposes. The county was renamed Emmet in 1843. Emmet was fully organized in 1853, gaining territory from Cheboygan, Mackinac, and Charlevoix counties, and Charlevoix was eliminated. The county has since undergone several boundary changes, losing and regaining territory, most notably Beaver Island and the Fox Islands.
