History
Formed in 1851 from Omeena County and Mackinac County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Grand Traverse was created on April 7, 1851, from Omeena County, which was then attached to Mackinac County. In 1853, Grand Traverse absorbed all of Omeena and gained Antrim, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Missaukee, Wexford, and Manistee, with most attached for judicial and municipal purposes. Over the following years, the county gradually lost territory as neighboring counties were organized and detached: Leelanau in 1863, Antrim in 1863, and Benzie in 1869.
