History
Formed in 1829 from Lenawee County and Oakland County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Kalamazoo County was named after the Kalamazoo River. When created in 1829, it was not fully organized and was initially attached to St. Joseph County for administrative and judicial purposes. Kalamazoo was fully organized on October 1, 1830, and detached from St. Joseph, with Barry, Calhoun, and Eaton counties attached to it for judicial purposes. Over the following decade, much of the county was lost as new counties including Allegan, Clinton, Gratiot, Ionia, Isabella, Kent, and Midland were created from its territory, and Barry, Calhoun, Eaton, and Allegan were organized and detached.
