History

Formed in 1843 from Chippewa County, Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Marquette was initially not fully organized and was attached to Chippewa for judicial purposes. The county was detached from Chippewa and attached to Houghton in 1846, then fully organized and detached from Houghton in 1851. Between 1851 and 1875, Marquette gained and lost territory through several boundary adjustments with neighboring counties including Houghton, Schoolcraft, and from non-county areas.
