History
Formed in 1840 from Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Keskkauko County was created from Michilimackinac in 1840 and was not fully organized, remaining attached to Michilimackinac for judicial purposes. In 1843, Keskkauko was renamed Charlevoix, after Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix. The county was eliminated in 1853 when it lost all its territory to Emmet County, but was recreated in 1869 from Antrim, Emmet, and Otsego counties with somewhat different boundaries. In 1895, Charlevoix County gained part of Manitou County, including Beaver Island and surrounding islands, and Manitou was eliminated.
