History

Formed in 1831 from Kalamazoo County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Clinton County was named after DeWitt Clinton. When first created in 1831, Clinton was not fully organized and was attached to Kalamazoo County, but was soon transferred for judicial purposes to Kent County in 1836 and then to Shiawassee County in 1837. Clinton was fully organized and detached from Shiawassee County on March 18, 1839. In 1845, part of Gratiot County was attached to Clinton, but Gratiot was fully organized and detached again in 1855.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
