History
Formed in 1840 from Michilimackinac County, Mackinac County, Oceana County and Kent County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Created in 1840 from Michilimackinac (now Mackinac) and Oceana, Newaygo County was initially unorganized and attached to Kent County for judicial purposes. In 1846, part of Newaygo was attached to Ottawa County for judicial purposes; the county was fully organized and detached from both Kent and Ottawa in 1851. Between 1857 and 1859, the county experienced several boundary adjustments: Lake and Osceola were attached from Mason in 1857, Mecosta was attached from Kent, Lake was re-attached to Mason in 1858, and Mecosta and Osceola were detached when Mecosta was organized in 1859.
