History
Formed in 1829 from Lenawee County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Cass County was created by Michigan Territory from Lenawee County on October 29, 1829, initially not fully organized and attached to Lenawee. Four days later, on November 4, 1829, Cass was fully organized and Berrien and Van Buren counties were attached to it for administrative and judicial purposes. In 1831, Cass lost territory to the creation of Allegan and Ottawa counties and a small area to St. Joseph County. Berrien detached in 1831 and Van Buren detached in 1837, after each was fully organized.
