History

Formed in 1840 from Michilimackinac County, Mackinac County and Saginaw County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally created as Cheonoquet County from parts of Michilimackinac County and non-county area attached to Saginaw County, it was not initially organized and was attached to Michilimackinac for judicial purposes. In 1843, Cheonoquet County was renamed Montmorency after the House of Montmorency. The county was then successively attached to Cheboygan County and later Alpena County for judicial and municipal purposes before being fully organized and detached from Alpena in 1881.
