History

Formed in 1829 from Washtenaw County, Lenawee County and Oakland County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Jackson County was created by Michigan Territory on October 29, 1829, from Washtenaw County, with portions of Lenawee and Oakland counties attached. The county was named after Andrew Jackson. Initially not fully organized, Jackson County was attached to Washtenaw County for administrative and judicial purposes in November 1829, then fully organized and detached in August 1832. Ingham County was attached to Jackson for judicial purposes in 1837, then fully organized and detached in 1838.
