History

Formed in 1840 from Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

When created in 1840, Presque Isle County was not fully organized and was attached to Michilimackinac County for judicial purposes. In 1853, Presque Isle was detached from Mackinac County and attached to Cheboygan County for judicial and municipal purposes, with part of it transferred to Alpena County in 1857. In 1858, Presque Isle was fully detached from Cheboygan and attached to Alpena County, remaining under Alpena's jurisdiction until 1871 when it was fully organized as an independent county. In 1873, Presque Isle gained territory from Cheboygan County.
