History

Formed in 1840 from Saginaw County, Michilimackinac County and Mackinac County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally named Kanotin when created in 1840, the county was renamed Iosco in 1843. Iosco was fully organized and detached from Saginaw in 1857, and gained jurisdiction over portions of Lake Huron and Saginaw Bay. The county absorbed Ogemaw County in 1867, and Alcona and Oscoda were detached in 1869.
