History
Founded in 1815
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Wayne County was created by Michigan Territory on November 21, 1815, from non-county area, including part of a disputed strip west of Lake Erie that was claimed by Ohio but controlled by Michigan. The county gained the Michilimackinac District in 1816, but lost territory to the creation of Monroe County in 1817 and was eliminated from Ohio. Wayne County lost additional territory to the creation of Macomb County in 1818 and Mackinac County (formerly Michilimackinac) later that same year. In 1822, Wayne County gained territory from Monroe County while losing land to the creation of Washtenaw County, which was later fully organized and detached in 1826.
